The field of medicine has a long history of honoring firsts – the first
to perform surgery, to research a particular topic, or to discover a basic
science principle. Our society continues that tradition by honoring an
instrumental set of firsts at the University of Miami School of Medicine
(UMSM). On September 22, 1952, the UMSM opened its doors to its first
incoming class of medical students. This class graduated in June 1956
and was composed of 24 males and 3 females. The first male and female
to cross the stage and receive their M.D.s from UMSM was Sidney J. Adler
and Kathleen Everitt, respectively. Today, Dr. Sidney J. Adler has a successful
Obstetrics & Gynecology practice in Boca Raton, Florida. Dr. Kathleen
Everitt Kircher practice Pediatrics in LaGrange, Illinois before returning
to her hometown of Panama City, Florida. With hindsight, the Adler-Everitt
Academic Society honors this great set of firsts as we recognize the importance
of what began with them. |
