A man whose name means “unceasing gentle”, he is the Greek God of healing.
A deified mortal, Asclepius was educated by Chiron, who introduced Asclepius
to the healing arts. Asclepius became a skilled surgeon and used plants
and herbs for medicinal purposes. It has been said that Asclepius could
even bring life to those who were deceased. His ability to restore life
angered Hades, the ruler of the underworld. His gift was so magical and
so powerful, that it cost him his life. Zeus the ruler of all the gods
killed Asclepius, with a thunderbolt. Asclepius is most often represented
holding a staff with his sacred serpent coiled around it, which symbolizes
the renewal of youth as the serpent casts off its skin. |
