Ludwig Courvoisier was a surgeon in Europe in the 19th Century. He developed
the cholecystectomy and did much work with the biliary tract. His work
is recognized by the naming of the palpable, non-tender gallbladder as
the Courvoisier gallbladder and Courvoisier’s Law, which related to jaundice
and the biliary tree. He is a pioneer in the field of general surgery
ay and made great advances in both hepatobiliary surgical technique and
important contributions towards our understanding of the hepatobiliary
pathophysiology.
