As the earliest recorded physician in history, Imhotep was an Egyptian who practiced medicine as early as 2600BC. The Egyptians were the first society to have a specialized medicine profession and it is in this environment that Imhotep delved in to the theory of disease. He treated over 200 illnesses including tuberculosis, appendicitis, gallstones, gout and arthritis. His knowledge was vast as her performed many surgeries during his time and worked diligently to extract medicine from plants. A Renaissance man of his time, Imhotep was not only a physician, but also an astronomer and architect. He is responsible for designing the pyramids and even had his own cult following. He was regarded as a hero by many for his contributions to Egyptian society and medicine.
