As the earliest recorded physician in history, Imhotep was an Egyptian
who practiced medicine as early as 2600BC. The Egyptians were the first
society to have a specialized medicine profession and it is in this environment
that Imhotep delved in to the theory of disease. He treated over 200 illnesses
including tuberculosis, appendicitis, gallstones, gout and arthritis.
His knowledge was vast as her performed many surgeries during his time
and worked diligently to extract medicine from plants. A Renaissance man
of his time, Imhotep was not only a physician, but also an astronomer
and architect. He is responsible for designing the pyramids and even had
his own cult following. He was regarded as a hero by many for his contributions
to Egyptian society and medicine. |
